A Plain Guide to Wearing Sunscreen in the Tropics
Remedies from the Kampung
Long before skincare came in bottles, Malaysian households kept their remedies in the kitchen and the kampung garden. Pandan, serai, kunyit and virgin coconut were used on skin and hair for generations, valued for the moisture, freshness and comfort they bring. Unlike heavy synthetic fillers, these plants carry their own fatty acids, antioxidants and soothing compounds, which is why so many of them still turn up in modern formulas today.
Take virgin coconut oil, cold-pressed from fresh kernels: it is rich in fatty acids that soften dry skin and give hair a gentle gloss. Pegaga, the creeping herb that grows along every monsoon drain, has long been used to calm skin, while green tea from Cameron Highlands brings antioxidants that help skin cope with the sun and the city.
Gentle Enough for Sensitive Skin
One of the biggest advantages of plant-based ingredients is how gentle they can be. Harsh surfactants, synthetic fragrance and high levels of alcohol often leave skin red, tight or itchy, especially when it is already stressed by heat. Well-made botanical formulas skip most of these, so they suit skin that reacts easily.
Pegaga and lidah buaya are good examples. Both are known for their cooling, calming feel, which makes them a natural fit for skin that turns red after a day outdoors or a long commute. Used in sensible amounts, they let even sensitive skin enjoy botanical care without any fuss.

Living With Heat, Haze and Humidity
Our climate is hard work for skin. Strong sun, seasonal haze and constant sweat leave it oily on the surface yet dehydrated underneath, and hours in air-conditioning dry it out further. Antioxidant-rich plants help skin deal with daily stress, while light humectants keep water where it belongs.
Kunyit and calamansi bring a brighter, more even look, and kelulut honey draws moisture into the skin without feeling sticky. Rice water, a favourite in many Malaysian homes, helps skin feel smoother and more supple. Layered thinly, morning and night, these ingredients give skin steady support through the heat and the air-con, while staying gentle and easy to wear.
